History and Background
Most dynamic processes occurred in geosystems or geosphere under interaction between lithosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, and biosphere can be described as multiscale and multiphysics processes. Their activities involve the interaction and evolution of the thermal, fluidal, solid, chemical, and biological movements which follow the universal basic law of material movement or energy transition. Thermal–hydrological–mechanical–chemical-biological (THMCB) multi-field coupling effect will occur in geosystems under changing environment. The coupling processes of geomaterial is not the simple superposition of multiphysical fields, but the mutual influence and action of each physical field. The research on fracture evolution, deformation mechanism, mechanical constitutive and coupling model construction should be comprehensively analyzed. The analysis of multiscale and multiphysics processes of geosystems not only involves the development of mineral resources, oil and gas fields, geothermal resources and other resources and energy fields, but also water conservancy and hydropower engineering, underground engineering, underground nuclear waste disposal, and deep buried energy storage. It is of great practical significance to analyze and study the multiscale and multiphysics processes for reducing and ensuring engineering safety.
Aims and Perspectives
Therefore, it is urgent to establish a committee on multiscale and multiphysics processes in geosystems and geohazards. The main objectives of this committee are to: (1) propose and guide the important key scientific problem and future development direction; (2) solve and consult the major difficulties and puzzles of geotechnical engineering design, construction and geo-disaster prevention under extreme environment; (3) discuss and review the state of the art of theories and methodologies in systematic prevention and control of geo-disasters; (4) compile and develop corresponding specifications related to geoengineering construction and disaster prevention under the complex environment of multiphysical fields coupling; and (5) help the high-quality development of geological engineering. The committee also encourages all participants to facilitate tight cooperation between international organizations, global stakeholders, local and regional governments, universities and scientific academies, and advanced enterprises.
