History and Background
Waterfront area is defined generally as the area of interaction between land and water. It is always the part of a town or city adjoining a river, lake, harbour, etc., which is one of the areas largely influenced by human activities and nature process. The primarily power of attracted people on waterfronts is visual landscape effects of water on relaxation. The cities located on the banks of intersecting rivers, estuaries and deltas, generally have many long waterfronts, which increase the chance of public spaces located on the waterfront and also of these being connected to other hinterland public spaces. Meanwhile, waterfront area is also a special area being productive and biologically diverse ecosystems, which is affected by natural and anthropogenic disasters such as flooding, erosion, landslides and pollution. As a result, many waterfronts fell into disuse and some waterfronts virtually became a deserted, inaccessible and unsafe area, further separating the urban core from the water. Thus, it is highly urgent and necessary to preserve the waterfront area under climate change and human activities.
Aims and Perspectives
Under such circumstances, it is timely to institute a committee on Environment and Disaster in Waterfront Area. The Committee aims to (1) review the state of the art of theories and methodologies in resilient-based prevention of Environment and Disaster in Waterfront Area; (2) propose the important key scientific problem and future development direction about waterfront area; (3) help promote sustainable development of waterfront area by conducting exchanges and cooperation with government, universities, enterprises and other research institutes.
