Committee on Seismic Performance-based Design for Resilient and Sustainable Slope Engineering

History and Background

Earthquake-induced slope hazards are always numerous, widespread, and catastrophic. In order to prevent and mitigate the landslide disaster triggered by earthquake, the First International Symposium on Seismic Performance and Design of Slopes (ISSPDS), Co-organized by Tongji University, International Consortium on Geo-disaster Reduction (ICGdR) and UNESCO Chair on Geoenvironmental Disaster Reduction, was held in Shanghai, China during August 18-19, 2018. After this event, Professor Yu Huang proposed to establish the “Committee on Seismic Performance-based Design for Resilient and Sustainable Slope Engineering” at the Board of Representative Meeting of ICGdR held in Paris on August 27, 2018, and the proposal was approved. After that, the committee continued to make effort to promote the advances on slope hazard mitigations and turned the ISSPDS into a serial event. The 2nd International Symposium on Seismic Performance and Design of Slopes was successfully held on January 18–22 2020 in Edinburgh, U.K. Now the 3rd International Symposium on Risk Assessment and Sustainable Stability Design of Slopes is going to be held on March 18-21,2022, Sendai, JAPAN.

Aims and Perspectives

Committee on Seismic Performance-based Design for Resilient and Sustainable Slope Engineering aims to propose and guide the important key scientific problem and future development direction; solve and consult the major difficulties and puzzles of performance-based evaluation and design implement in practical slope projects; discuss and review the state of the art of theories and methodologies in resilient-based prevention of slope disasters; compile and develop corresponding specifications related to slope failure prevention; help promote and improve the resilient and sustainable development of communities and cites, in addition to establish contacts and conduct exchanges and cooperation with government, universities, enterprises and other scientific research institutes.
