Professor Manchao He, Vice President of the International Consortium on Geo-disaster Reduction (ICGdR), President of the Chinese Society of Rock Mechanics and Engineering (CSRME), and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, led the scientific research team to conduct on-site inspections on the Tibet and Sichuan sections of the Sichuan-Tibet Railway from July 17 to 21, 2022. The important active fault zones and tunnels along the line have been inspected, and the second Qinghai-Tibet Plateau scientific expedition mission of the Ministry of Science and Technology in 2022 has been successfully completed. The main members who participated in this on-site inspection are as follows: Yong Zhao (General Manager, Tibet Railway Construction Company), Xiaojie Yang (Deputy Secretary and Secretary General of the Party Committee of CSRME), Zhigang Tao (Professor of China University of Mining and Technology (Beijing), Secretary General of the International Correlation Research Program (ICRP)), Shengxiang Lei (Chief Engineer of China Railway Construction Corporation Limited), Xinyue Li (General Manager of Sichuan-Tibet Railway Sichuan Co., Ltd.), Cailiang Liu (Deputy General Manager of Sichuan-Tibet Railway Sichuan Co., Ltd. and Commander of Kangding Project Department), Guozhu Yang (Chief Engineer of China Railway Construction Sichuan-Tibet Headquarters), Jianguo Hu (Deputy General Manager and Chief Engineer of China Railway 12th Bureau), Zhibiao Guo (Secretary General of Soft Rock Branch of CSRME).

On July 17, Academician He led the team to Nyingchi City, Tibet, visited the Sichuan-Tibet Railway rock core showroom, and organized a special meeting to discuss the difficult technical issues related to the Sichuan-Tibet Railway Tunnel. The meeting was chaired by Yong Zhao (General Manager of Sichuan-Tibet Railway Tibet Co., Ltd.), the participants made a detailed report on the project overview, construction progress, major adverse geology and countermeasures, technological innovation and difficult projects of the Sichuan-Tibet Railway. Experts participating the meeting conducted full exchanges and in-depth discussions on the problem of adverse geological hazards in the Sichuan-Tibet railway tunnel.

On the morning of the 18th, Academician He led the team to investigate the entrance of the Sejila Mountain Tunnel, and observe the damage of the surrounding rock after the rockburst. In the afternoon, the team went to Layue Tunnel and inquired about the rock temperature, water temperature, heat source control measures, cooling measures and safeguard measures in the tunnel. Subsequently, a symposium was held in the on-site project department of China Railway Tunnel Bureau. At the meeting, the relevant staff of China Railway Tunnel Bureau reported in detail the rockburst problems and disposal measures faced during the TBM excavation of the Sejila Mountain Tunnel. Academician He answered relevant questions in detail, and put forward guidance and suggestions from the aspects of rockburst formation mechanism, classification, and influencing factors. The difference between rockburst and rock brittle failure is expounded in detail, and the prevention and control measures of hard rock rockburst based on excavation compensation theory are proposed; Relevant staff of China Railway Fifth Bureau reported the construction of Layue Tunnel with high ground temperature and ultra-high temperature hot water, and consulted Academician He on the impact of high temperature hot water on the stability of surrounding rock and durability of support system. Academician He gave a detailed answer to the relevant questions, put forward a development management plan based on the principle of protecting the ecology, and proposed solutions for advanced detection, advanced grouting and advanced reinforcement for the problem of high temperature heat damage.

On the afternoon of the 19th, Academician He led the team to the Kangding No. 2 Tunnel No. 1 Inclined shaft to investigate the water inrush situation, and held a symposium in the on-site project department of the China Railway 12th Bureau. The meeting was chaired by Shengxiang Lei (the chief engineer of China Railway Construction Co., Ltd.). At the meeting, the staff of China Railway 12th Bureau reported the water inrush situation of Kangding No. 2 Tunnel. Academician He asked the on-site technicians about the flow rate, water pressure, clarity, particle size and shape of water particles at various water inrush points. Experts at the meeting conducted in-depth discussions and fully exchanged opinions on the problems encountered in the process of tunnel construction.

On the morning of the 20th, Academician He led the team to the Kangding No. 2 Tunnel No. 2 Inclined shaft to investigate the water-rich construction. and held a symposium in the on-site project department of the China Railway 12th Bureau. The meeting was chaired by Shengxiang Lei (the chief engineer of China Railway Construction Co., Ltd.). At the meeting, the relevant staff made a detailed report on the general situation of the Kangding No. 2 Tunnel No. 2 inclined shaft project, including the project progress, the construction technical difficulties, the water output in the tunnel and the response measures. Academician He asked questions such as regional geology, the change of water output in the cave over time, and water pressure. Experts at the meeting fully discussed, connected and exchanged scientific and technical problems in the construction process.

On the afternoon of the 20th, a special meeting was organized to discuss the difficult technical issues related to the Sichuan section of the Sichuan-Tibet Railway. The meeting was chaired by Cailiang Liu (deputy general manager of Sichuan-Tibet Railway Sichuan Co., Ltd. and commander of the Kangding Project Department). The meeting first reported the water damage situation of Kangding No. 2 Tunnel, and then Academician He Manchao made a report on the water-rich problem of Kangding No. 2 Tunnel entitled "The Mechanism of Inrush Water and Mud Disaster in Kangding No. 2 Tunnel and Its Prevention and Control Countermeasures". The scientific issues and engineering and technical problems faced by the Kangding No. 2 Tunnel were fully discussed.
